Dale Messick

Dale Messick (actually: Dalia Messick ; born April 11, 1906 in South Bend , Indiana , USA ; † April 5, 2005 in Sonoma County , California , USA) was an American comic artist.

She first studied at the Ray Commercial Art School in Chicago , but dropped out to become a draftsman. First, they worked for a company that made greeting cards, the company left but when her during the Great Depression was reduced wages. She went to New York and initially worked at another greeting card company, drawing comics in her spare time. She changed her name from Dalia to Dale, as women still had a hard time in their day as comic artists and drawings by "Dale" were more respected by publishers.

Messick became famous through the comic series Brenda Starr, which appeared in 1940 .
