Dominic Ignatius Cardinal Ekandem (born June 23, 1917 in Obio Ibiono , Nigeria , † November 24, 1995 in Abuja ) was a Nigerian clergyman and archbishop of Abuja.

Life

Dominic Ignatius Ekandem received the sacrament of ordination on December 7, 1947 after his training in Onitsha , Enugu-Okpala and Calabar . He then worked as rector of the boys' seminary of Calabar and as parish priest before he was appointed titular bishop of Hierapolis in Isauria and auxiliary bishop in Calabar on August 7, 1953 . The episcopal ordination donated him the Bishop of Calabar, James Moynagh SPS , on February 7, 1954; Co- consecrators were the Vicar Apostolic of Brazzaville , Paul Joseph Biéchy CSSp , and the Bishop of Buéa , Peter Rogan MHM .

From 1962 to 1965 Ekandem took part in the Second Vatican Council .

Pope John XXIII appointed him Bishop of Ikot Ekpene on March 1, 1963 ; Pope Paul VI took Dominic Ignatius Ekandem on May 24, 1976 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Marcello in the college of cardinals . Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Abuja in 1989 and bestowed on him the personal title of Archbishop . In 1992 Dominic Ignatius Ekandem resigned the leadership of the diocese for reasons of age.

He died on November 24, 1995 in Abuja and was buried in the local pro-cathedral.
