Cardinal John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan (born January 29, 1944 in Kabba , Kogi , Nigeria ) is a Nigerian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Abuja . He was President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) .

Life

From 1963 to 1965 John Onaiyekan studied philosophy in the seminary of St. Peter & Paul in Bodija, Ibadan, and from 1965 to 1969 theology at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. On August 3, 1969, he was ordained a priest by Auguste Delisle CSSp in Kabba. He then taught biblical studies and French at St. Kizito's College , Isanlu, and was active in pastoral care. In 1971 he became rector of the St. Clement Junior Seminary in Lokoja. Between 1971 and 1973 he studied biblical studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute (PIB) in Rome; In 1976 he was at Urbania with the work Priesthood in Pre-Monarchical Ancient Israel and in Traditional Owe Society. In 1989 he was a member of the commission for the preparation of the African Synod of 1990.

On July 7, 1990 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of the diocese of Abuja and on September 28, 1992 he succeeded the retired Dominic Ignatius Cardinal Ekandem as bishop of Abuja. After elevation of the diocese to the Archdiocese of Abuja , he became its first archbishop in 1994.

In 1992 he was appointed Relator Generalis Adiunctus of the African Synod, and since 1994 he has been a representative in the Roman Synod of Bishops. In 1994 he became Vice President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) , and in 1999 its President.

On October 24, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. announced that he wanted to create him cardinal . John Onaiyekan was a participant at the religion summit in Lindau on Lake Constance , which the organization " Religions for Peace " organized in August 2019.

On November 9, 2019, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.

Ecumenism in Nigeria
