Ignatius Ayau Kaigama
Ignatius Ayau Kaigama (born July 31, 1958 in Kona , Taraba , Nigeria ) is a Nigerian Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Abuja .
Life
Ignatius Ayau Kaigama studied after his priestly training at St. Augustine's seminary in Jos theology in Rome . He was ordained a priest on June 6, 1981 . He received his doctorate in theology in 1991 from the Pontifical Gregorian University .
Pope John Paul II appointed him on February 3, 1995 as the first bishop of the newly established diocese of Jalingo . The episcopal ordination donated him on April 23, 1995 the Bishop of Yola , Patrick Francis Sheehan OSA ; Co- consecrators were Gregory Obinna Ochiagha , Bishop of Orlu , and Athanasius Atule Usuh , Bishop of Makurdi . On April 14, 2000 Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Jos .
Kaigama was chairman of the Nigerian Bishops' Conference from 2012 to 2018 and chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), an umbrella organization of Christian churches for the state of Plateau . He is also chairman of an “Interreligious Committee for Peace” convened by the state of Plateau. Together with the Emir of Wase, Alhaji Haruna Abdullahi (died September 17, 2010), he worked for an understanding between Christians and Muslims.
After the riots in Jos of January 2010, he worked to calm the situation and clarify the conflict in the international press.
Pope Francis appointed him Coadjutor Archbishop of Abuja on March 11, 2019 .
With the resignation of John Cardinal Onaiyekan on November 9, 2019, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Abuja.
Viewpoints
As chairman of the Nigerian Bishops' Conference, Kaigama said in a letter to the Nigerian President in 2014 that the law to increase penalties for homosexual people protects human dignity, is in accordance with the moral and ethical values of African cultures and emphasizes the sanctity of marriage as a union of men and woman.
