The Bistum Makurdi ( lat. : Dioecesis Makurdensis ) is in Nigeria preferred Roman Catholic diocese based in Makurdi .

history

The diocese of Makurdi was founded on July 9, 1934 by Pope Pius XI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Ad enascentis from cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate West Nigeria as Apostolic Prefecture Benue . On April 18, 1950, the Apostolic Prefecture Benue by Pope Pius XII. renamed with the Apostolic Constitution Laeto accepimus in Apostolic Prefecture Oturkpo . The Apostolic Prefecture Oturkpo gave on July 14, 1950 parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture Yola . Another assignment of territory took place on February 21, 1955 to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Kabba .

On April 2, 1959, the Apostolic Prefecture Oturkpo was by Pope John XXIII. raised to a diocese with the Apostolic Constitution Sacrosancta Divini Magistri and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Lagos as a suffragan . The Diocese of Oturkpo was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Kaduna as a suffragan on July 16, 1959 . On June 28, 1960, the Oturkpo diocese was renamed the Makurdi diocese . The diocese of Makurdi was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Abuja as a suffragan on March 16, 1994 . The diocese of Makurdi gave on July 10, 1995 parts of its territory to establish the diocese of Otukpo . Another assignment of territory took place on December 5, 2000 to establish the diocese of Lafia .
