The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City ( lat. : Archidioecesis Urbis Beninensis ) is in Nigeria situated Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Benin City .
history
The Archdiocese of Benin City was on May 2, 1884 by Pope Leo XIII. two Guineas established as Apostolic Prefecture of Upper Niger from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate . On August 24, 1911, the Apostolic Prefecture of Upper Niger gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of East Nigeria . The Apostolic Prefecture of Upper Niger was renamed the Apostolic Prefecture of West Nigeria on August 24, 1911 .
On August 24, 1918, the Apostolic Prefecture of West Nigeria was founded by Pope Benedict XV. with the Apostolic Constitution Summa afficimur laetitia raised to the Apostolic Vicariate . The Vicariate Apostolic of West Nigeria gave up on July 9, 1934 parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefectures Calabar and Benue . On January 12, 1943, the Apostolic Vicariate of West Nigeria was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate Asaba-Benin .
The Apostolic Vicariate Asaba-Benin was on April 18, 1950 by Pope Pius XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Laeto accepimus raised to the diocese and renamed the diocese of Benin City . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Lagos as a suffragan . On February 21, 1955, the Diocese of Benin City gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture Kabba . Further territorial assignments took place on March 10, 1964 to found the Warri diocese and on July 5, 1973 to found the Issele-Uku diocese .
On March 26, 1994, the diocese of Benin City was raised to an archdiocese by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Multis nominibus . The Archdiocese of Benin City gave up on December 4, 2002 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Auchi . Another assignment of territory took place on December 14, 2005 to establish the Uromi diocese .
