Richard Anthony Burke

Richard Anthony Burke SPS (born February 19, 1949 in Clonmel ) is Old Archbishop of Benin City .

Life

Richard Anthony Burke joined the Order of St. Patrick's Society for Foreign Missions and made his profession on October 1, 1971. The auxiliary bishop in Dublin , James Kavanagh , dedicated it on June 7, 1973 Deacon and the retired Bishop of Calabar , James Moynagh PLC, ordained him on May 18, 1975 priests .

John Paul II named him Coadjutor Bishop of Warri on December 6, 1995 . The Pope personally donated his episcopal ordination on January 6 of the next year; Co- consecrators were Giovanni Battista Re , substitute for the State Secretariat , and Jorge María Mejía , secretary of the Congregation for Bishops .

After Edmund Joseph Fitzgibbon's retirement , he succeeded him on March 3, 1997 as Bishop of Warri. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Apostolic Administrator of Warri on December 24, 2007, and resigned from that office on March 29, 2010. He was named Archbishop of Benin City on December 24, 2007, and installed in office on March 7 of the next year. He resigned from his office on May 31, 2010.

Burke is accused maintained sexual relations with underage girls, as well as in concubinage to have lived. On May 31, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI. the resignation request accepted. Burke is said to have had sexual contact with the Canadian politician Dolores Atwood, who was initially 14, for five years .
