Edmund Joseph Fitzgibbon

Edmund Joseph Fitzgibbon SPS (born March 1, 1925 in Ballylegan near Glanworth , County Cork , Ireland , † April 17, 2010 in Kiltegan , County Wicklow , Ireland) was an Irish missionary and Bishop of Warri in Nigeria .

Life

Edmund Joseph Fitzgibbon joined the Order of St. Patrick's Society for Foreign Missions in Kiltegan, Wicklow, and was ordained a priest on April 9, 1950 . He served in the mission in Africa.

In 1964 Pope Paul VI appointed him . as prefect of the Apostolic Prefecture of Minna, which he transferred to the Diocese of Minna in 1973 . 1975 he was by Paul VI. Appointed Titular Bishop of Forum Traiani and Apostolic Administrator in the Diocese of Port Harcourt and in the Diocese of Warri . He was ordained bishop by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Cardinal Agnelo Rossi ; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishop and later Cardinal, Bernardin Gantin and his friar, James Moynagh SPS, former Bishop of Calabar in Nigeria. In 1991, Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of the Warri diocese . His resignation was granted in 1997 by Pope John Paul II.

Edmund Joseph Fitzgibbon was the council father of the fourth session of the Second Vatican Council .
