The Erzbistum Calabar ( lat. : Archidioecesis Calabarensis ) is in Nigeria preferred Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Calabar .

history

The Archdiocese of Calabar was founded on July 9, 1934 by Pope Pius XI. Established with the Apostolic Constitution Ad enascentis from cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate of West Nigeria as the Apostolic Prefecture of Calabar . On March 13, 1938, the Apostolic Prefecture of Calabar gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Ogoja . The Apostolic Prefecture of Calabar was founded on June 12, 1947 by Pope Pius XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Solet Apostolica Sedes raised to the Apostolic Vicariate .

The Apostolic Vicariate Calabar was on April 18, 1950 by Pius XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Laeto accepimus raised to the diocese and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Onitsha as a suffragan . On March 1, 1963, the Diocese of Calabar gave up parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Ikot Ekpene . Another assignment of territory took place on July 4, 1989 to establish the diocese of Uyo . On March 26, 1994, the diocese of Calabar was raised to an archbishopric by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Laetis captis .
