history

The forerunner of today's archbishopric is the Apostolic Prefecture Jos, founded on April 9, 1934 from the Apostolic Prefecture of Northern Nigeria (Nigeria Settentrionale). On June 29, 1953 the founding of the diocese Jos and on March 26, 1994 the elevation to an archdiocese. The Archdiocese of Jos is the metropolitan seat.

The suffragan dioceses Bauchi (1996), Jalingo (1995), Maiduguri (1953), Pankshin (2014), Shendam (2007) and Yola (1952) are subordinate to the Archdiocese of Jos .

Riots

In the Igbo settlement areas there is a high proportion of Catholics. In the north of the country the number of Muslims clearly exceeds that of Catholic Christians. In Nigeria there has been massive persecution of Christians since the introduction of Sharia law in parts of the country in 2000 , mainly in the Jos area.

In January 2010, over 200 people allegedly died in disputes over the construction of a mosque in a Christian district of Jos. Archbishop Ignatius Ayau Kaigama worked to calm the situation and clarify the conflict in the international press.

In March 2010 riots broke out again between members of the Fulani (Muslims) pastoral people against the Berom (Christians) villagers in Dogo Nahawa village, in which over 500 people died.
