Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar

Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar (born August 24, 1956 in Sokoto ) is the Sultan of Sokoto .

Abubakar is the son of the former sultan Siddiq Abu Bakar dan Usuman and the younger brother of his predecessor Mohammadu Maccido . He attended the Nigerian Defense Academy in Kaduna from 1975 and joined the Nigerian Army two years later as a sub-lieutenant . As a member of an elite force , he was trained in India and Canada and served in the life guards of Nigerian President Ibrahim Babangida and in peacekeeping forces in Chad and Sierra Leone in the 1980s . Most recently he was military attaché for Pakistan until he was appointed Sultan of Sokoto on November 2, 2006 after the death of Mohammadu Maccido.

As Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar is the spiritual leader of the approximately 70 million Nigerian Muslims. He is also the nominal head of Sokoto State and head of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs .

Sa'ad Abubakar and the Archbishop of Abuja, John Onaiyekan , spoke out in a joint press conference in Lagos in 2009 against religious disputes and in favor of cooperation between Islam and Christianity in Nigeria. Both are co-presidents of the Nigerian Association of Action for the Faith.

He was one of the 138 signatories of the open letter a common word between us and you ( Engl. A Common Word Between Us and You ), the personalities of Islam to "leaders of Christian churches everywhere" (Engl. "Leaders of Christian Churches, everywhere ... ") (October 13, 2007).
