Mohammadu Maccido

Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammadu Maccido Abubakar (born April 20, 1926 in Dange , † October 29, 2006 near Abuja ) was Sultan of Sokoto from April 21, 1996 until his death .

Maccido was the eldest son of the seventeenth sultan of Sokoto, Siddiq Abu Bakar dan Usuman, who ruled for over fifty years. When his successor Ibrahim Dasuki was imprisoned and expelled by the Nigerian military dictator Sani Abacha , he finally became the nineteenth sultan.

As Sultan of Sokoto, Maccido was considered the spiritual leader of the approximately 70 million Nigerian Muslims. He was also the nominal head of Sokoto State and head of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs . He died, like his son, who was a Nigerian senator, and his grandson in the crash of an ADC Airlines plane to Sokoto . His successor is Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar .
