Jozef Cardinal Samaša (Hungarian Samassa József ) (born September 30, 1828 in Zlaté Moravce (Hungarian Aranyosmarót), Kingdom of Hungary , today Slovakia ; † August 20, 1912 in Eger ) was Archbishop of Eger .

Life

József Samassa studied in Bratislava and Vienna trays Catholic theology and philosophy and received on July 23, 1852 sacrament of Holy Orders . From 1852 to 1855 he taught at the Episcopal Gymnasium of Tyrnau (Trnava). From 1855 to 1859 he held the position of prefect of studies at the seminary of Budapest . From 1859 to 1861 he taught Catholic theology at the Seminary in Gran (Esztergom).

In 1862 he received his doctorate in theology at the University of Vienna and was then full professor for Exegesis of the New Testament and Biblical Theology at the University of Budapest until 1867 . In 1869 he became a member of the Hungarian parliament and adviser to the minister of education and culture. At the same time he was given the management of the Abbey of St. Helena de Földovár.

In 1871 Pope Pius IX appointed him . to Bishop of Spiš and in 1873 to Archbishop of Eger. In 1892 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Hungarian Order of St. Stephen . Pope Pius X accepted József Samassa in 1905 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Marco in the college of cardinals . József Samassa died on August 20, 1912 in Eger and was buried in the local cathedral .
