Raúl Cardinal Silva Henríquez SDB (born September 27, 1907 in Talca , Chile , † April 9, 1999 in Santiago de Chile ) was Archbishop of Santiago de Chile .

Life

Cardinal Silva Henríquez

Raúl Silva Henríquez was the 16th of 19 children of the wealthy farmer and Catholic politician Ricardo Silva. He attended the Colegio de la Salle Talca in Talca and from 1920 to 1922 the German-speaking Liceo Alemán Santiago in Santiago de Chile. He enrolled at the age of 16 years and studied at the Catholic University of Santiago de Chile Law and a PhD doctorate in law. In 1930 he entered the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco . He studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Santiago de Chile and Turin . He received his doctorate in both theology and in canon law , and received on 3 July 1938, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then worked as a lecturer and leader in various institutions of his order. In 1945 he founded the Federation of Catholic Schools of Chile and became its first president. In the 1950s he founded the Catholic Chilean Institute for Refugee Issues and for a long time headed the International Caritas Association as Vice President.

In 1959 Pope John XXIII appointed him . to the Bishop of Valparaíso . The episcopal ordination received Raúl Silva Henríquez on 29 November 1959 by the Apostolic Nuncio in Chile, Opilio Rossi . Co- consecrators were Emilio Tagle Covarrubias (es) , Titular Archbishop of Nicopolis ad Nestum and Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Santiago de Chile, and the Bishop of Punta Arenas , Vladimiro Boric Crnosija SDB .

In 1961 the Pope entrusted him with the management of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Chile, on March 19, 1962 he accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Bernardo alle Terme in the College of Cardinals . Raúl Cardinal Silva Henríquez became President of the International Caritas Association in October 1962. In the same year he took part in the Second Vatican Council (until 1965). He took part in the conclave of 1963 and subsequently represented the Pope at numerous festivities as the papal legate . Raúl Cardinal Silva Henríquez received the human rights award of the Latin American Jewish Congress in 1971. During the military dictatorship in Chile, he was committed to protecting human rights. In 1978 he received the United Nations Human Rights Prize , and in 1979 he was awarded the Bruno Kreisky Prize for Services to Human Rights . After the death of Pope Paul VI. he took part in the two conclaves of 1978. In 1983, Cardinal Raúl Silva Henríquez resigned the leadership of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Chile. In 1992 he took part in the fourth general conference of the Latin American episcopate in Santo Domingo . He died on April 9, 1999 in Santiago de Chile and was buried in the local cathedral .

honors and awards

He has received various awards, including the 1971 Human Rights Prize (Premio Derechos Humanos) of the Jewish Congress in Latin America (Congreso Judío Latinoamericano) and the United Nations Human Rights Prize in 1978 . In 1986 he received the Prince of Asturias Prize for his commitment to the Vicariate of Solidarity .

In honor of Raúl Silva Henríquez, the Chilean state minted a 500 pesos bimetallic coin in circulation.
