Luis Aponte Martínez

Luis Cardinal Aponte Martínez (born August 4, 1922 in Lajas , Puerto Rico , † April 10, 2012 in Hato Rey ) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of San Juan .

Life

Luis Aponte Martínez, child from a farming family with 18 siblings, studied in the St. Joseph's seminary Boston and at the Boston University the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology . Bishop James Edward McManus CSsR donated the sacrament of ordination to him on April 10, 1950 in San Germán . In the following ten years he worked as a pastor and diocesan secretary in the diocese of Ponce as well as chaplain of the National Guard . During the 1950s he was superintendent of the Catholic schools in the diocese of Ponce. He was also Chancellor of the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico .

On July 23, 1960, Pope John XXIII appointed him . the titular bishop of Lares and auxiliary bishop in Ponce. He was ordained episcopal by the Archbishop of New York , Francis Cardinal Spellman , on October 12 of the same year; Co-consecrators were Archbishop of San Juan, James Peter Davis , and Bishop Edward John Harper , Prelate of the Virgin Islands . On April 16, 1963 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Ponce and succeeded him as Bishop of Ponce on November 18 of the same year with the resignation of James Edward McManus'. The inauguration took place on February 22 of the following year. On November 4, 1964, he was appointed Archbishop of San Juan. He was introduced to the office on January 15 of the following year.

Luis Aponte Martínez participated in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 and in 1969 in the first extraordinary assembly of the World Synod of Bishops. He was the council father for the first, third and fourth sessions.

Pope Paul VI accepted him on March 5, 1973 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Maria Madre della Provvidenza a Monte Verde in the college of cardinals . He was the only Puerto Rican cardinal in the Catholic Church. He was chairman of the Economic Affairs Committee of the Council of Latin American Bishops CELAM . He was president of the Episcopal Conference of Puerto Rico as well as of CELAM.

On March 26, 1999, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation because of his age.

At the 2005 conclave for the election of Pope Benedict XVI. he did not take part because he was over 80 years old. He was eligible to vote at the conclave for the election of John Paul I ( August 1978 conclave ) and John Paul II ( October 1978 conclave ).

He was a spiritual advisor to the Order of Lazarus .
