Río Piedras is the largest district in the city of San Juan in Puerto Rico . Founded in 1714, it has been home to the most important university in the country since 1903. This owns the publicly accessible botanical garden of San Juan, in which over 200 species can be found. Río Piedras with the districts Caimito, Cupey, El Cinco, Gobernador Piñero, Hato Rey, Monacillo, Oriente, Quebrada Arenas, Sabana Llana, Tortugo and Universidad was originally independent, but was incorporated on July 1, 1951.
