Mario Hernández

Mario Hernández (born June 24, 1924 in Río Piedras ; † February 2, 2013 ibid) was a Puerto Rican musician and composer.

Hernández began playing the guitar as a child. He performed successfully as a singer in Rafael Quiñone 's Vidal's Tarima del arte program and worked with Leocadio Vizcarrondos Sexteto Puerto Rico . For a year he was a member of the group Conjunto Libertad as a tres player and singer alongside Ignacio Caraballo before founding Los Diablos del Caribe in 1950 , an ensemble of eight musicians with whom he performed Si tú supieras (his first own composition), Wed único amor , pica mi gallo , enamorado and other boleros, guarachas, montunos and danzas. The group became known with the album A bailar y gozar con Mario Hernández y sus Diablos del Caribe .

In 1956, Hernández went to New York and founded a new Puerto Rican orchestra with Ignacio Caraballo. With these new Diablos del Caribe he made his debut in the exclusive Manhattan Center and played the works of Tito Rodríguez , Frank Grillo and Tito Puente in the Palladium Ballroom . He also founded the Sexteto Borinquen and accompanied musicians such as La Lupe , Tongolele , María Luisa Landín , Panchito Riset , Davilita and Daniel Santos with his group La Sonora Matancera . The more than one hundred titles that Hernández has recorded include compositions by Johnny Pacheco , Oscar D'León , Rafael Cortijo , Celia Cruz , Pete Rodríguez and Johnny Albino .
