She was born the daughter of a worker of Bacardi - distillery in Santiago's San Pedrito. Before starting her career as a singer, she was a teacher. In 1958 she married and performed with her husband Eulogio "Yoyo" Reyes and another singer. This trio "Los Tropicuba" broke up in 1960. La Lupe began a solo career in a nightclub in Havana , La Red . Their first album, Con el Diablo en el Cuerpo ( With the devil in the body ) brought out the Discuba label in 1961.

In 1962 she emigrated to the United States of America . In New York City she performed at the Cabaret La Barraca , where she was discovered by Mongo Santamaría . Over the next five years she released ten albums.

She sang in different styles of Cuban music like Son montuno and Bolero , but also in other Caribbean styles like Merengue , Boogaloo , Plena and Bomba . In the 1960s she had great success in New York City with Tito Puente . She was the first Latin American singer to give a sold out concert at Madison Square Garden . She has covered many English songs in Spanish or her accented English, including Yesterday , Twist & Shout , Dominique from The Singing Nun , Unchained Melody , Fever and America from the musical West Side Story .

She was a supporter of the Santería . In the late 1970s, her label Fania Records ended the contract, mainly because they relied on the less controversial Celia Cruz . In the early 1980s, Lupe was penniless. She died in the Bronx , leaving behind her husband, William Garcia, their daughter Rainbow, and their son of Eulogio Reyes, Rene Camaro.

reception

In the 1990s, interest in her was revived when director Pedro Almodóvar used her bolero “Puro Teatro” in the soundtrack of his film Women on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown . In 2002, East 140th Street in the Bronx was renamed La Lupe Way in her memory .

La Lupe's life is the theme of the 2006 play La Gran Tirana (The Great Tyrant) by the Cuban author Carlos Padrón. The Cuban feature film La Mala by directors Lilian Rosado and Pedro Pérez Rosado from 2008 is also based on her life story .
