Pete Rodríguez

Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez Rodríguez (born January 31, 1932 in Ponce / Puerto Rico , † December 2, 2000 ), actually Pedro Juan Rodriguez Ferrer, was a Puerto Rican salsa musician .

Career

Pete Rodriguez started playing bongos at the age of five and later joined local bands in Ponce. In the 1950s, his family emigrated to the Bronx / New York City . During his appearances in the local bars he met Johnny Pacheco and in 1963 he recorded the album "Suavecito" with him.

In 1964 Pacheco and his lawyer Jerry Masucci founded the legendary salsa group Fania All-Stars , Pete Rodriguez worked on the album "Canonazo". Between 1964 and 1973 Pacheco and Rodriguez recorded the albums "La Perfecta Combinacion (1970)," Los Compadres "(1971 ) and ”Tres De Café Y Dos De Azucar” (1973). In 1974 Rodriguez left the Fania All-Stars and made a career as a solo artist. He won an award with the first solo album El Conde from 1974. It followed in 1976 ”Este Negro Si Es Sabroso ”with the hit" Catalina La O ", which was voted the ninth best salsaal album of its time. From 1983 to 1989 Rodriguez returned to Fania All-Stars and received a Grammy in 1987 for the album" Salsobita " he continued his solo career.

After 1990 he only recorded two albums and in 1993 he had a big hit with "Esos Tus Ojos Negros". In 2000 he was hired by Tito Puente to sing homage to Benny Moré . Like Tito Puente, Pete Rodriguez suffered from a weak heart and died in December 2000 at the age of 68.
