The Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico ( Spanish : Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico , short: PUCPR ) is a Puerto Rican university under papal law .

The Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico was founded in 1948 as the Catholic University of Santa Maria by James Edward McManus CSsR, Bishop of Ponce , and James Peter Davis , Archbishop of San Juan de Puerto Rico . Vicente Murga was the founding president. The university seat was in the Colegio San Conrado in Ponce , a Catholic primary school. In 1949, 120 km² was released for development by the state authorities. In 1950 the name was changed to Catholic University of Puerto Rico . On January 25, 1991, under Pope John Paul II , it was recognized as a university under papal law .

In 1961 the Faculty of Law (Escuela de Derecho) was set up, an exchange program with the USA and Spain was initiated, and faculty such as Rafael Hernández Colón , Governor of Puerto Rico, were hired. In 1976 the Faculty of Medicine (Escuela de Medicina) was set up , from which the Ponce School of Medicine & Health Services was founded in 1980. In 2009 the Faculty of Architecture was opened . The establishment of the graphic design and fashion design faculties and a film school are planned .

Well-known personalities of the PUCPR were Juan Fremiot Torres Oliver and Luis Cardinal Aponte Martínez as well as Ivan Illich .

The university's headquarters are in Canas Urbano, a district of Ponce . In 1982, the offshoot of the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez in Mayagüez and the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico in Arecibo in Arecibo, initially as a university center, from 1996 as Mayagüez campus respectively. Arecibo Campus established. There is another campus in Coamo.
