Giovanni Umberto Cardinal Colombo (born December 6, 1902 in Caronno Pertusella , Province of Varese , Italy , † May 20, 1992 in Milan ) was Archbishop of Milan .

Life

Giovanni Colombo studied at the University of Milan , the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology . He became a deacon in November 1925 and received the sacrament of ordination from Eugenio Cardinal Tosi on May 25, 1926, and then taught at the seminary and at the University of Milan. From 1939 to 1953 he headed the boys' seminary in Milan as Regens , and from 1953 to 1960 he carried out the same task in the seminary .

On October 25, 1960 Pope John XXIII appointed him . the titular bishop of Philippopolis in Arabia and auxiliary bishop in the archdiocese of Milan. The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini, the future Pope Paul VI. , on December 7th of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Urbino , Anacleto Cazzaniga (it) , and Giuseppe Schiavini , titular bishop of Pharsalus and auxiliary bishop in Milan. In 1963 Giovanni Colombo was appointed Archbishop of Milan to succeed Montini. He participated in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . Even before the council, he was a member of the preparatory commission for seminars and universities. In the consistory of February 22, 1965, Pope Paul VI took him. as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Silvestro e Martino ai Monti in the cardinals college. Under Cardinal Colombo, a major pastoral reform took place in Milan in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council. In 1978 he took part in the August and October conclaves. In the latter case, he was occasionally even considered papabile .

His resignation was granted on December 29, 1979 by John Paul II . From January 1980 he lived in the Corso Venezia seminary in Milan. Giovanni Colombo died on May 20, 1992 at the age of 89 of a heart attack and was buried in the local cathedral . At the funeral two days later, which was presided over by Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini , Cardinal Vicar Camillo Ruini , Giacomo Cardinal Biffi and Marco Cardinal Cé were present.
