Giuseppe Morozzo Della Rocca

Giuseppe Morozzo Della Rocca (born March 12, 1758 in Turin , † March 22, 1842 in Novara ) was a Piedmontese clergyman, bishop of Novara and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He came from a family of the Piedmontese nobility and was the twelfth of thirteen children of Giuseppe Francesco Lodovico Morozzo, marchese of Brianzè, and his wife Ludovica Cristina Lucrezia Balbo Bertone, daughter of conte Giulio Cesare Bertone Balbis di Sambuy and sister of the Bishop of Novara Marco Aurelio Balbis Bertone . His younger brother Carlo Lodovico became a well-known scientist and president of the Turin Academy of Sciences. After becoming an orphan, he was raised by his uncle, the Bishop of Novara. His tutor was the future Bishop of Pavia Paolo Lamberto Allègre . Giuseppe Morozzo Della Rocca studied at the University of Turin , where he received his doctorate theologiae on April 23, 1777 . From 1777 to 1778 or only 1778 he was rector of the University of Turin. In 1778 he continued his studies at the Academy for the Church Nobility . As a trainee lawyer at the Courts of Justice of the Apostolic Signature , he entered the service of the Roman Curia on December 6, 1781 . Pope Pius VI appointed him Apostolic Protonotary and appointed him Vice- Delegate in Bologna on August 13, 1784 , which Giuseppe Morozzo Della Rocca remained until 1785. He was governor of Civitavecchia from February 25, 1785 to March 7, 1794, when he was appointed governor of the province of Campagna e Marittima. From August 18, 1795 to March 28, 1797 he was governor of Perugia . After the death of Pius VI. he accompanied Cardinal Hyacinthe Sigismond Gerdil as a conclavist to Venice for the conclave 1799-1800 , where he became secretary of the conclave . He led the newly elected Pope Pius VII to Rome. He was ordained a priest on March 14, 1802 .

Pope Pius VII appointed him titular archbishop of Thebae on March 29, 1802 . He received his episcopal ordination on April 4th of the same year in the Roman Church of San Carlo ai Catinari Cardinal Leonardo Antonelli ; Co- consecrators were Carlo Buronco , Archbishop of Turin , and Archbishop of Curia Giovanni Coppola . On May 11, 1802, he was appointed nuncio to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany , he left Florence in 1806. On December 2, 1807, Giuseppe Morozzo Della Rocca became secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars , a position he held until his cardinal elevation.

In the consistory of March 8, 1816 , Pius VII created him cardinal priest . Giuseppe Morozzo Della Rocca received the cardinal's hat on March 11th of the same year, on April 29th he was awarded Santa Maria degli Angeli alle Terme as the titular church . He became Bishop of Novara on October 1, 1817 with the personal title of Archbishop . As a cardinal, Giuseppe Morozzo Della Rocca took part in the conclave of 1823 , which Pope Leo XII. chose. He was also a participant in the 1829 conclave , from which Pius VIII emerged as Pope. Finally, he was also among the cardinals of the conclave 1830-1831 , to which Gregory XVI. was elected Pope.

Giuseppe Morozzo Della Rocca died in Novara and was buried in the local cathedral .
