Giovanni Michiel
Giovanni Michiel , also called Giovanni Micheli , (* between April 1446 and April 1447 in Venice , † April 10, 1503 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman, bishop of Verona and cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
origin
Giovanni Michiel came from a Venetian patrician family, he was the son of Lorenzo Michiel and Nicolosa Barbo, a sister of Pope Paul II. He was thus a cousin of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Zeno .
Church career
He became apostolic protonotary and initially lived with his uncle, Pope Paul II, in the Vatican Palace . On December 23, 1467 he received the Benedictine monasteries in Bosco in the diocese of Aquileia and San Fermo il Piccolo in the diocese of Verona in commendam , after the Pope had renounced it. From 1497 he was also abbot of San Stefano all'Isola .
His uncle elevated him to cardinal deacon in the consistory of November 21, 1468 and awarded him the title of deaconry Santa Lucia in Septisolio on November 22, 1468 . Around 1470 he moved to the titular deaconry Sant'Angelo in Pescheria . On March 18, 1471 Giovanni Michiel became the bishop of Verona in commendam appointed this position, however, occurred because of the conflicts between the Venetian Republic and the Papal States not initially; he held it until his death. Around 1484 he opted for the cardinal class of cardinal priests with the titular church of San Marcello ; the Diakonie Sant'Angelo kept in Pescheria, however, in commendam until his death.
As cardinal, Giovanni Michiel took part in the 1484 conclave , which Pope Innocent VIII elected. He succeeded the newly elected Pope as Camerlengo of the Holy College of Cardinals on September 15, 1484 for the remainder of the year and was then elected to this position for the period from January 9, 1485 to January 11, 1486. The Pope appointed him Bishop of Padua , but the Republic of Venice opposed his appointment and confiscated all of the Cardinal's income from his properties on Venetian territory. He resigned the office in March 1487, even before he had taken possession of the diocese. On June 5, 1486 he was appointed legatus a latere for the Papal States and the castles and fortresses of the Holy See. He became inspector of the papal army in the war against King Ferdinand I of Naples ; later he was entrusted with the peace negotiations with the king, which led to a peace treaty signed on August 11, 1487. On March 14, 1491 he was raised to cardinal bishop with the suburbicarian diocese of Albano , on October 10 of the same year he opted for the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina . He participated in the papal conclave, 1492 in part, that Rodrigo Borgia chose as pope, which the Pope name Alexander VI. assumed. The newly elected Pope appointed him Cardinal Bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina on August 31, 1492 , as he had previously promised him in the conclave . On January 23, 1497 Giovanni Michiel was appointed titular Latin Patriarch of Antioch .
Death and speculation about a poisoning
Giovanni Michiel died on April 10, 1503 after two days of violent vomiting . He was buried in his titular church, San Marcello al Corso in Rome.
The circumstances of his sudden death prompted the Venetian ambassador Giustiniani to raise suspicions of poisoning . Pope Julius II had Michiels Koch and a subdeacon named Asquino di Colloredo arrested. In 1504, both of them confessed to a murder conspiracy that was instigated by Cesare Borgia under torture . The cook was executed for it. Modern historians, however, doubt the version of a poisoning at the instigation of Cesare Borgias, since Julius II at that time had a considerable interest in the burden of the Borgias, and Cesares in particular.
