Ostap Mykytowytsch Weressai ( Ukrainian Остап Микитович Вересай * 1803 in Kaljuschynzi , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † April 1890 in Sokyrynzi , Poltava Governorate, Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian Kobzar and singer ( tenor ).

Life

Ostap Weressai, who came from a poor, musical Ukrainian family, was blind from his early teens. From 1818 he studied the play of sound instrument Kobsa . In the 1850s he became friends with the painter Lev Schemchuschnikow .

From the 1860s he was the most famous player of Ukrainian folklore and historical songs. Ethnologists like Oleksandr Russow and Pavlo Tschubynskyj became aware of him and studied Weressai's art of playing. Mykola Lyssenko wrote a monograph on the works of his repertoire.

In 1871 he appeared in Kiev for the first time and in 1873 he played at a specially convened meeting of the Southwestern Department of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society . In 1875 he traveled with Lysenko and Chubynskyj to St. Petersburg , where he also received a lot of attention.

Honors

In 2003 the Ukrainian National Bank issued a two hryvnia commemorative coin with his portrait on the occasion of Ostap Weressai's 200th birthday .
