Oleksandr Oleksandrowytsch Russow (born March 7, jul. / 19th March  1847 greg. In Kiev , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire ; † October 8 jul. / 21st October  1915 greg. In Saratov , Saratov province , Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian statistician , anthropologist , folklorist and social activist. He was Sofija Rusova's husband .

Life

Oleksandr Russow was born as the son of a military doctor in Kiev in 1847 and graduated from the historical-philological faculty of St. Vladimir University there from 1868 . He then worked as a teacher in Slatopil near Tschyhyryn as well as in Kiev and Saint Petersburg . Already during his school and university days he took an active part in the Ukrainian national movement. From 1854 to 1876 he worked for the newspaper "Kiev Telegraph" and was an active member of the south-western department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society . In 1870 he became a member and shortly afterwards a leading member of the Kiev Hromada.

From 1876 on he wrote statistical studies in Kiev and Kharkov as well as in the Chernigov , Cherson and Poltava governorates . From 1899 to 1902 he was acting head of the statistical and economic bureau of the Poltava governorate and from 1902 to 1908 he headed the statistical department of the insurance company "Nadezhda" in Saint Petersburg. He then taught statistics at the Kiev Economic Institute until his death and headed the statistical commission of the historical department of the Ukrainian Shevchenko Association . During the First World War , the economic institute was evacuated to Saratov, where Russow after an asthma attack on October 8th July. / October 21,  1915 greg. Died in 1915. He was buried on October 15th July. / October 28,  1915 greg. October at the Baikowe Cemetery in Kiev. Russow is the author of over 50 publications, most of which are related to statistics and Ukrainian folklore.

On August 30, 1874, he married the pedagogue, social and educational activist, writer, historian and anthropologist Sofija Rusowa . He is the father of the Ukrainian politician Mychailo Russow ( Михайло Олександрович Русов ; 1876–1909) and the Ukrainian biologist Jurij Russow ( Юрій Олександрович Русов ; 1895–1961).
