Sofija Fedoriwna Rusowa ( Ukrainian Софія Федорівна Русова * February 6 . Jul / 18th February  1856 greg. In Oleschnja , Chernigov Governorate , Russian Empire , † 5 February 1940 in Prague , Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia ) was a Ukrainian educator , social - and education activist, writer , historian , anthropologist , art historian , literary critic and a founder of the Ukrainian women's movement .

Life

Sofija Rusowa was born on her father's estate in Oleschnja in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast Chernihiv as the fifth child of Colonel of the Russian Army Fyodor Lindfors of Swedish origin and his wife Anna, the daughter of General Alexander Karlovich Scherwe ( Александр Карловерч 1779–1858). In 1865 the family moved to Kiev , where Sofija went to school and graduated from the Funduklej Girls' High School in Kiev.

On August 30, 1874 she became the wife of the Ukrainian statistician, anthropologist, folklorist and social activist Oleksandr Russow ( Олександр Олександрович Русов 1847–1915)

After the Bolsheviks came to power in Ukraine, she emigrated to Czechoslovakia . She died on February 5, 1940 in Prague and was buried in the Olšanské cemetery there.

Honors

In 2005 the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine donated a medal named after Rusaowa to be awarded to educators who have made a significant contribution to the development of preschool and school education. The Ukrainian National Bank issued a two hryvnia commemorative coin on its 160th birthday in 2016 .
