Inside the museum

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje presents, collects and researches current and modern art.

history

After an earthquake almost completely destroyed Skopje in 1963 and many of the city's art treasures were damaged or destroyed in the process, the meeting of the International Association of the Plastic Arts in October 1963 in New York called for the city to have a new art collection. After organizations such as AICA and ICOM joined the call and artists and curators also stood behind the call, the desire for a museum arose. On February 11, 1964, the Skopje City Council decided to found a new museum. The Polish government announced a competition and took over the construction of the museum. The Polish architects J. Mokrzynski, E. Wierzbicki and W. Klyzewski were commissioned with the planning and execution, and the museum finally opened in 1970.

location

The museum is located in a park on a hill above the Vardar near the old city fortress.

architecture

The building has an area of 5,000 m² and around 3,000 m² of exhibition space. Its exterior is said to be reminiscent of the city's medieval fortress. The central structure is massive, square and has a central courtyard. In front of it is a crossbar. Both parts of the building are connected by another transom. The ground floor of the main building has moved in and is almost completely glazed. Narrow circular columns support the overhanging upper floor.

It was built in 1970 and designed by architects Jerzy Mokrzyński and Eugeniusz Wierzbicki .
