Johann David Schubert (* 1761 in Dresden ; † 1822 there ) was a German painter , engraver and draftsman .

Life

Schubert was the son of an organ builder and architectural draftsman. After the death of his father (1772) he studied at the Dresden Art Academy and was a student of Charles Hutin and Giovanni Battista Casanova . From 1781 he worked first as a battle painter, from 1786 as a master drawing and from 1795 as chief painter at the Meissen porcelain factory . In 1801 he became a teacher of history painting at the Dresden Academy. In January 1824 his estate, a collection of around 6,000 copper engravings, hand drawings and books, was auctioned. He created numerous engraving templates to illustrate books of his time.
