His younger brother Vladimir Schemchuschnikow (1830-1884) was also a poet. He graduated from the first cadet corps in Saint Petersburg and studied between 1849 and 1852 at the Academy of Arts under Karl Brjullow .

From 1852 to 1856 he lived in the Ukraine, where he collected folk objects and made friends with the kobzar Ostap Weressai . During this time he got to know the works of Taras Shevchenko , whom he met personally in 1860. Shemchushnikov created sketches from the life of the Cossacks and people in Ukraine, from the Holy Scriptures and from the life of the saints. His best works were depictions of life in Ukraine. In Sevastopol , Shemchushnikov experienced the last days of the Crimean War . From 1857 to 1860 he toured Europe and from 1860 he lived in Saint Petersburg and since then has mainly created etchings. Between 1861 and 1862, with the participation of O. Beideman and L. He published his memoirs under the title “My memories from the past”. He died at the age of 83 in Tsarskoye Selo near Saint Petersburg.
