Filippo Calandrini (* 1403 in Sarzana ; † July 18, 1476 in Bagnoregio ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church . He was bishop of Bologna from 1447 to 1476 .

Life

He was the eldest child of Tommaso Calandrini and his second wife Andreola Tomeo dei Bosi. His half-brother on the maternal side was the future Pope Nicholas V , a son of the mother's first husband, Bartolomeo Parentucelli. Calandrini's career began as a papal notary before becoming Archdeacon of Lucca . From August to September 1447 he was governor of Spoleto . He was elected Bishop of Bologna on December 18, 1447 and retained this bishopric until his death.

His half-brother Pope Nicholas V raised him to cardinal priest on December 20, 1448 with the titular church Santa Susanna , in 1451 he moved to the titular church San Lorenzo in Lucina . On the orders of the Pope, he traveled with Cardinal Juan Carvajal to Florence on January 17, 1452 to meet Friedrich III. to greet. He accompanied the king on his journey to the imperial coronation in Rome. After the coronation ceremony , which took place on March 19 of that year, the two cardinals accompanied the emperor on the way back until it reaches the limit of 26 April Papal States reached.

Twice, 1454–1455 and 1471–1472, Calandrini was chamberlain to the Holy Cardinals College . After the death of his half-brother Nicholas V, he took part in the 1455 conclave , in which Pope Calixt III. was chosen. For Nicholas V, Calandrini had a grave monument built in the Vatican basilica . In June 1458 he left Rome because of the raging plague there , he returned to the city for the 1458 conclave and took part in the election of Pope Pius II , with whom he was friends. In 1459 he was appointed cardinal major penitentiary. Again he took part in the 1464 conclave , from which Paul II emerged as Pope.

On October 14, 1468 he was raised to Cardinal Bishop of Albano . As such, he took part in the 1471 conclave , which Sixtus IV elected as pope. On August 30, 1471 he moved to the suburbicarian seat of Porto e Santa Rufina .

Filippo Calandrini died on July 18, 1476 in Bagnoreggio of the plague and gout . His body was transferred to Rome and buried there in his titular church, San Lorenzo in Lucina ; his nephew Giovanni Matteo had an elaborate tomb erected there.
