Benjamin Haemhouts (* 1972 in Bonheiden , Belgium ) is a Belgian musician and composer .

Life

At the age of 8, Haemhouts began musical training on the euphonium at the Willebroek municipal music school. Nine years later he studied trombone at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven. As a solo trombonist he played with the Bamberg Symphony in Germany. Haemhouts recognized his passion for conducting and began to study orchestral conducting with the Russian conductor Alexander Polyanichko.

In 2008 he became chief conductor of the Belgian Chamber Philharmonic, concentrating on contemporary works with a combination of baroque and classicism. His interpretations are characterized by precise articulation as well as great contrasts and a dynamic playing style. The Belgian weekly KNACK titled one of his first concerts with the Belgian Chamber Philharmonic "Energy from Belgium!", Which became Haemhout's trademark, because this slogan perfectly describes Haemhout's ambition and passion. He worked with the conductors Sir Simon Rattle, Valery Gergjev, Bernard Haitink, Herbert Blomstedt, Gustavo Dudamel, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Jonathan Nott and Essa Pekka Salonen, which had a lasting influence on him.

Ben Haemhouts is described as a "innovator" who approaches the classical repertoire from a modern perspective. He is looking for young composers with their own musical language. He was a guest conductor in youth orchestras, including the "Junge Deutsche Philharmonie", the symphony orchestra of the Antwerp University and the "Orchester Jeunesses Musicales".

In addition to the musical performances with the Belgian Chamber Philharmonic, Haemhouts introduced a project with children. The idea behind this was that music should be accessible to all strata of the population and should be viewed as part of society.
