Carl Onora Ikeme (born June 8, 1986 in Sutton Coldfield ) is a former English football goalkeeper of Nigerian origin. He was most recently under contract with the English first division club Wolverhampton Wanderers and was part of the extended squad of the Nigerian national team due to his Nigerian roots .

Athletic career

After Ikeme graduated from the Wolverhampton Wanderers Academy, then coach Dave Jones promoted him to the professional squad for the 2003/04 season. The "Wolves" played in the Premier League this season ; Ikeme was not used as the planned "number 3", although after the injury of Matt Murray he sat behind substitute goalkeeper Michael Oakes until the return of the "veteran" Paul Jones several times and waited for his chance. He finally gained his first practical experience at the Football Conference at Accrington Stanley . The club's management loaned him there between October and November 2004. At his home club he made his debut on August 23, 2005 on the occasion of a 5-1 league cup win against Chester City , after which he was loaned out again between September 2005 and January 2006 - now in the fourth-rate Football League Two at Stockport County .

Ikeme played his first championship game for Wolverhampton Wanderers a year after his first competitive appearance against Luton Town on August 26, 2006 , when he was substituted on for Murray in the 1-0 win in the Football League Championship at a late point in time. A serious knee injury during the 2006/07 season finally ensured that Ikeme was out until late 2007. In order to regain the appropriate competitive practice, he mostly found himself in the reserve team. The first chance to perform on a "bigger stage" arose for Ikeme on September 27, 2008, when he was allowed to represent the goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, who was temporarily demoted by coach Mick McCarthy , in a second division game. In the 2-0 win against Bristol City , he showed a good performance, which initially brought him the promotion to "new number 1". After ten more games, however, Ikeme suffered a hip injury in the game against Sheffield United, as a result of which Hennessey was able to fight back the previously lost position. The increased appreciation among the “Wolves” was expressed in December 2008 by an early contract extension until the end of the 2011/12 season.

During the 2009/10 season, however, he did not complete a single league game for Wolverhampton and was awarded to several clubs. On October 28, 2009 he moved for four weeks on loan to third division club Charlton Athletic to replace injured goalkeeper Robert Elliot . After five appearances for Charlton, four of them in Football League One and one in the Football League Trophy , the next loan followed immediately after the loan period had expired. Ikeme joined the second division Sheffield United for a month . After two league appearances, both of which ended victorious for Sheffield, he returned to Wolverhampton at short notice. On January 6, 2010, the goalkeeper changed again on loan from the club and helped out with the Queens Park Rangers . There he established himself as a regular goalkeeper and finished the 2009/10 season with the "Hoops" in 13th place. On August 26, 2010 he moved for a month on loan to the English second division Leicester City , in August 2011 to Middlesbrough FC . On July 27, 2018, Ikeme announced that he was retiring from his professional career due to his leukemia.

National team

Despite his English birthplace, Ikeme decided to play for the Nigerian national team. He made his debut for Nigeria in a 0-0 draw against Tanzania on September 5, 2015. Due to his leukemia disease, he was unable to take part in the 2018 World Cup . He made a total of nine international matches for Nigeria.
