Christopher Ross "Chris" Gunter (born July 21, 1989 in Newport ) is a Welsh football player who has been with Reading FC since 2012 . He has been part of the Welsh national team since 2007 and has been their record international player since 2018 .
Club career
Cardiff City
Chris Gunter was a striker for the Durham Colts and Albion Rovers teams as a child. At the age of eight, he became a defender and joined the Cardiff City youth team . With this team he received his first professional contract for the 2006/07 season. Due to many injuries to regular players, Gunter came on some missions in which he always knew how to convince. During the winter break of the 2007/08 season, the Welshman moved to the Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur for £ 2mn . Since he did not come to the hoped-for time in Tottenham , he moved on March 12, 2009 on loan to the second division Nottingham Forest .
Nottingham Forest
After relegation in the Football League Championship , Forest bought him from Spurs in mid-July 2009 for a £ 1.75 million transfer. Gunter signed a four-year contract in Nottingham. The 2009/10 season played Chris Gunter as an undisputed regular player. He played 46 league games and scored his first and so far only goal for his new team in a 1-0 away win over Plymouth Argyle on Matchday 9 . With a third place in the table, Nottingham reached the first play-off round, but missed promotion to the Premier League prematurely due to two defeats against Blackpool FC . Gunter had a strong season and at the end of the season, together with his teammate Lee Camp, was voted into the PFA Team of the Year in the English second division. Also in the Football League Championship 2010/11 Gunter moved with his team into the play-off semi-finals, but failed again prematurely at Swansea City . During the season he extended his contract until 2014.
Reading FC
On July 17, 2012, Premier League promoted Reading FC announced that Gunter will join them for the 2012/13 season. Gunter initially received a three-year contract until June 30, 2015. However, the Welshman and his new team could not avert immediate relegation in the first year at Reading. In the following 2013/14 season he reached seventh place with his club and thus missed participation in the promotion playoffs. Another year later Reading played against relegation and managed to stay in league with 19th place in the table. Regular Gunter had replaced Jobi McAnuff, who had migrated to third division Leyton Orient, as captain. In March 2015, Reading pulled the option of a one-year contract extension for the Welshman. He finished the 2015/16 season with Reading in 17th place in the lower midfield. On February 18, 2016, Gunter extended his expiring contract for another two years.
National team
Chris Gunter went through all the junior selections of the Welsh national football team . In the U-21, at 16 years and 299 days, he was the second youngest player on this team to date. On May 26, 2007 he made his debut at the Racecourse Ground when playing against New Zealand for the first selection of the Dragons . This made him the youngest Cardiff City player to have played in the national team by then. He then had to wait six months before his next appearance and was only used again on November 17, 2007 in the penultimate game in the qualifying for the European Championship 2008 , but then played the entire game against Ireland. From then on he was a regular player and was not used only four times in the next 70 games.
In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , he played all ten games. Together with teammates like Gareth Bale , Craig Bellamy and Simon Davies , however, he missed qualifying in Group 4, as fourth behind Germany , Russia and Finland . They lost all six games against the three nations placed in front of them, with only four wins against Azerbaijan and Liechtenstein . In qualifying for the Euro 2012 he was only missing in the 1: 4 defeat against Switzerland . Again it was not enough for the Welsh to reach the finals.
In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , he was used in all the Welsh games, but they were out of the race for one of the finals early on. Things then went better in qualifying for the 2016 European Championship , where he didn't miss a minute and helped Wales qualify for a major football tournament for the first time since 1958 and for the first time ever to qualify for a European Championship finals.
At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Wales squad. He was part of the team and was on the field for over 90 minutes in all six games. In the quarter-finals, he gave the template to 3-1, which made the victory over Belgium perfect. Wales made it to the semi-finals on their EM debut and only then was eliminated from eventual European champions Portugal.
On November 20, 2018, he replaced the long-standing Welsh national player Neville Southall as the record holder in the friendly against Albania with his 93rd international match .
