Garath James McCleary (born May 15, 1987 in Oxford , England ) is an English - Jamaican football player who has been under contract with Reading FC since 2012 .
Club career
Non-League Football
Garath McCleary learned to play football as a youth at Oxford United . In 2005 he left his hometown Oxford and moved to the lower class non-league football team Slough Town . After over a season with the Rebels , as the club is called in England, McCleary moved in January 2007 to FC Bromley , which he helped to promote to Conference South .
Nottingham Forest
In late January 2008 he signed his first professional contract with Nottingham Forest and achieved promotion to the Football League Championship in his first season with the Reds . McCleary is also used as a winger and as an attacker at Forest, but he has not yet proven to be so accurate in professional football, which is why he prefers to play in the outer positions in midfield. In July 2009 he agreed with the club from Nottingham on an early contract extension, the validity of which is limited to 2012. In the Football League Championship 2009/10 McCleary (24 games) received regular appearances at Forest, but due to the greater competition he could not earn a regular place. Also in the 2010/11 season he remained a substitute player (18 games / 2 goals) and again only missed promotion to the Premier League with his team in the play-off semifinals .
After Steve Cotterill had replaced his predecessor Steve McClaren as coach in the course of the first half of the 2011/12 season , McCleary became a regular. On March 20, 2012, he scored four goals in the 7-3 away win over Leeds United . Shortly thereafter, he received the March 2012 player of the month award.
