Wesley James "Wes" Burns (born November 23, 1994 in Cardiff ) is a Welsh football player who was appointed to the preliminary EM squad of the Welsh national team in 2016 . The attacking player is under contract with the English third division club Fleetwood Town .
Athletic career
Burns attended Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg, a Welsh-speaking comprehensive school and is therefore fluent in Welsh. He started as a teenager at his hometown club Cardiff City , but got no U-16 contract there. He therefore moved to the other side of the Severn estuary to the English second division club Bristol City . On December 18, 2012, he signed his first professional contract there at the age of 18. In January 2013 he made his first league appearance against Leeds United . After four games he was awarded to the fifth division team Forest Green Rovers , for which he scored one goal in six games. In April he returned to Bristol and came away to three more missions, but could no longer prevent Bristol from being relegated bottom of the table. In the 2013/14 season he made 21 third division appearances with one goal and Bristol ended up in a midfield position in the table. In the 2013/14 FA Cup they failed in the third main round after a replay at Watford FC .
After two games in the 2015/15 season , he was loaned out to fourth division club Oxford United , where he scored one goal in nine games. Then you loaned him to the fourth division Cheltenham Town , but in which he could not prevent in 14 games with six goals that he was relegated to the fifth division . At the end of the season he returned to Bristol for a game and was with the club Master of Football League One 2014/15 . At the beginning of the second division season 2015/16 he played 14 league games, two cup games and one league cup game (loss to fourth division Luton Town ) for Bristol, but was then loaned to the third division club Fleetwood Town , where he scored five goals in 14 games. For the 2016/17 season Burns was loaned to Scotland for Aberdeen FC . He made his debut for the "Dons" on July 14, 2016 in the game of the second qualifying round in the Europa League against FK Ventspils from Latvia, in which he also scored his first goal for the club. At the beginning of 2017 he then moved permanently to Fleetwood Town. He became a regular player there, but did not jump out of 11th place for the club in the next two seasons.
National team
Burns played in eight qualifying games for the U-21 European Championship 2015 for the U-21 team , in which Wales u. a. against San Marino with 0: 1 lost. For San Marino this was the first ever sporting victory in a European Championship qualification, before there were only two wins at the green table . Fourth, the Welsh missed qualifying for the finals. In the ongoing qualification for the U-21 European Championship 2017 , he played six of the previous seven games and scored three goals.
In October 2015, he received his first invitation to the senior team when he was nominated for the injured David Cotterill . He didn't even sit on the bench at the games against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Andorra and instead played for the U-21s in the European Championship qualifiers.
On May 9, 2016, he was appointed as the only Welshman without an A international match in the preliminary squad for the Euro 2016, with which a training camp in Portugal began on May 23. In the end, however, he was not considered for the final squad.
