David Rhys George Best Cotterill (born December 4, 1987 in Cardiff ) is a former Welsh national football player who played for the Welsh national team from 2005 to 2016 on and off . The 1.75 meter tall winger was most recently under contract with Atlético de Kolkata in India .

Athletic career

Born in the Welsh capital Cardiff, Cotterill joined the youth department of Bristol City in nearby Bristol and played for the club in the 2005/06 season in the English third division. In the 2006/07 season succeeded as runner-up in the second division , but Cotterill moved to Wigan Athletic in the 2006/07 Premier League for 3.2 million euros . There he was used in 16 of 38 games and barely escaped relegation with his team as fourth from bottom. In the next season he was loaned to the second division Sheffield United after only two games , which then took him over for 2.6 million euros. At the end of the 2008/09 season they were third and still had the chance to qualify for the 2009/10 Premier League via playoff games. But they lost the playoff final against Burnley FC 0-1. In November 2009 he then moved first on loan and then for 675,000 euros to league rivals Swansea City , but missed the playoffs for promotion to the league with the "Swans" in seventh place. This succeeded the "swans" then in the next season, but he was awarded after 14 games to the league promoted Portsmouth FC . After he was not used in the Premier League after returning to Swansea, he moved to the second division FC Barnsley in spring 2012 on a free transfer . He escaped relegation with the club as fourth from bottom, but then moved to the relegated Doncaster Rovers . In the Football League One 2012/13 , however, he was with the Rovers champion and immediately rose again to the Football League Championship 2013/14 , from which the club immediately relegated. He then moved to Birmingham City on a free transfer to continue playing in the second division . This was followed by a six-month loan to Bristol City at the beginning of 2017 and during the winter break of the 2017/18 season he switched to the Indian first division club Atlético de Kolkata . In October 2018 he announced the end of his career as a player.

National team

Cotterill played three games for the Welsh U-19 team between 2004 and 2005. In March and September 2005 he was used in four European Championship qualification games of the Welsh U-21 selection .

On October 12, 2005, at the age of 17, he played for the Welsh national team for the first time . In the World Cup qualifying game against Azerbaijan , he came on in the 74th minute for two-time goalscorer Ryan Giggs . He was substituted on in the next game, but then only occasionally, but during that time he also played again for the U-21 team in qualifying for the U-21 European Championship in 2007 . After his eighth game, there was an eight-month break in which he missed seven games but played twice in qualifying for the 2009 U-21 European Championship . After he was substituted on again in three of four games, there was another break of almost 11 months in which he was not considered eight times. In the next 13 games he was substituted on five times and was in the 13th game on August 11, 2010 for the first time in the starting XI. He then promptly scored the 1-0 opening goal with his first international goal in the 5-1 win against Luxembourg , but was replaced in the 82nd minute. Until May 2011 he was not used again, then twice in a row, where he played over 90 minutes for the first time on May 27, 2011, but then was not used for almost 30 months. After a game in November 2013, it took 11 months until the next game, in which he was substituted on in the sixth minute and scored the 1-0 in the 30th minute in the 2-1 win against Cyprus . He was then used a month later in the next game in the first half, but then had to wait until March 2016 for the next game.

On May 9, 2016, he was appointed to the provisional squad for the Euro 2016, with which a training camp in Portugal will begin on May 23. He was then also taken into account for the final squad. He was one of three field players who were not used in the tournament. In October 2016 he played again in the World Cup qualifier against Georgia (1: 1). After that it was no longer taken into account.
