Owain Fôn Williams (born March 17, 1987 in Penygroes , Gwynedd ) is a Welsh football goalkeeper who played once for the Welsh national team in 2015 . The 1.93 meter tall goalkeeper has been under contract with the Scottish club Hamilton Academical since 2019 .

Athletic career

Fôn Williams went as a teenager to the English second division newcomer Crewe Alexandra , but there again in the third division at the end of his youth descent . During this time he was the goalkeeper of the U-19 team, but broke his leg in 2005, which slowed his career. In 2006 he received a two-year contract. He was then only the third goalkeeper at Crewe and did not appear in the league.

After his contract expired, he moved to the third division Stockport County in 2008 , where he quickly became the goalkeeper. In October 2008 he lost his regular seat to Fraser Forster , who was loaned out for six games. He then regained his regular place in goal and was named "Stockport County Player of the Year" in May 2009. That also piqued the interest of English Premier League clubs such as Newcastle United , Sunderland AFC and Blackburn Rovers , especially as Stockport County was in financial difficulties. But he stayed initially and despite good performances by Fôn Williams, the club rose from bottom of the table at the end of the 2009/10 season . In the following fourth division season he lost his regular place after four games to the eight years older new acquisition Matt Glennon . He was therefore loaned to league rivals FC Bury in October as a replacement for the injured Cameron Belford . After seven games, he returned to Stockport County, but was loaned to third division newcomer AFC Rochdale in January 2011 . For Rochdale he stayed seven clean sheets in 22 games and contributed to the fact that the newcomer had nothing to do with relegation as ninth.

In July 2011, he received a two-year contract with third division club Tranmere Rovers . With the Rovers he was 12th in the first two seasons, where he remained 15 times without conceding and 11th with 14 games without conceding. In the 2013/14 season he was only seven clean sheets and was relegated to the fourth division in the end. The following fourth division season did not go any better: again he and his team could only avoid a goal seven times and were then relegated last at the end.

Fôn Williams then moved to the Scottish Cup winners and first division club Inverness Caledonian Thistle , for whom he remained clean nine times in 38 first division games. After the end of the regular season they had to be ninth in the relegation play-offs, which they finished as the best team. As cup winners, Inverness was also qualified for the second qualifying round of the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League , but lost the home game against fourth of the Romanian championship Astra Giurgiu 1-0, so that the Romanians had a goalless draw in the second leg. In the Cup they failed in the quarter-final replay at Hibernian Edinburgh and in the League Cup at Ross County .

In January 2018, Fôn Williams was awarded to Indy Eleven in the North American Soccer League .

In June 2019 Williams moved to the Scottish first division club Hamilton Academical .

National team

Fôn Williams played for the Welsh U-17 and U-19 team , but was there initially in the second line behind Wayne Hennessey . In 2007 and 2008 he played nine games with the U-21 team in qualifying for the 2009 U-21 European Championship . He did not concede three times and after the end of the group stage, the Welsh group winners were, but then failed in the playoffs to England .

With the senior national team, he has remained on the bench in 25 games since 2013, including eight qualifying games for the 2014 World Cup and all qualifying games for the 2016 European Championship . The Welsh was able to qualify for a European Championship finals for the first time without his active participation. After qualifying, he made his first appearance in a 3-2 draw against the Netherlands on November 13, 2015, when he came on for Hennessey in the 74th minute.

On May 9, 2016, he was appointed to the provisional squad for the Euro 2016, with which a training camp in Portugal began on May 23. He was then considered as the third goalkeeper for the final squad, but was not used in the tournament. In the qualification for the 2018 World Cup , which began after the EM , he was nominated six times, but not used. After that he was not nominated again.
