Jonathan Peter "Jonny" Williams (born October 9, 1993 in Pembury , England ) is a Welsh national football player who has played for the Welsh national team since 2013 .
Athletic career
The south-east of London born Williams joined the youth department of the capital city club Crystal Palace and made his debut in the professional team of the second division in August 2011. After a season in the lower midfield with 14 appearances, he came in his second season to 32 games and the Club was able to take part in the playoffs for promotion as fifth, in which he was successful. After nine games in the Premier League 2013/14 he was awarded to the second division club Ipswich Town , for whom he played in 13 games in the upper midfield of the table. The 2014/2015 season he began with two first division games for Crystal Palace, but was then awarded again to Ipswich, first for five games in autumn 2014 and then again for two games in April 2015. At the beginning of the 2015/16 season he was initially awarded to the second division club Nottingham Forest , then returned to Crystal Palace in early 2016 after ten games to be awarded to Milton Keynes Dons after a first division game , for which he then played 13 second division games after recovering from a shoulder injury. This was followed by another loan to Ipswich Town and then to Sunderland AFC . At the beginning of 2019, he moved to third division Charlton Athletic on a free transfer . With these he rose to the second division after winning the promotion play-off final for the 2019/20 season.
National team
Since Williams' father was born in Anglesey , Wales, he can play internationally for Wales. He played for the U-17 team and for the U-19 team in the first and second qualifying rounds for the U-19 European Football Championship in 2013 , but could not qualify for the finals. In 2011, at the age of 17, he played three games in qualifying for the U-21 European Championship 2013 for the U-21 team .
After he was invited to the senior national team twice in 2012 but not used, he first played for the Welsh senior team on March 22, 2013 at the age of 19 . He came on as a substitute for the virus-weakened Gareth Bale in the 46th minute of the qualifying game for the 2014 World Cup against Scotland . Three days later he played against Croatia for 90 minutes as well as five months later in the next game against Ireland . In his fourth game he was substituted after an hour due to an ankle injury. He could therefore not be used in the following four games. In March 2014, he came on again for Bale in the 72nd minute against Iceland . Three months later, his namesake George came on for him in the 70th minute against the Netherlands , who later came on twice for him. Jonny was then nominated for the first qualifying game for the Euro 2016 in September 2014 against Andorra , but not used. In October against Bosnia and Herzegovina he was allowed to play again for 82 minutes and was then substituted due to injury. This was followed by an injury-related break in which he missed seven European Championship qualifiers and was then only reinstated for the last qualifying game against Andorra, when the first qualification for a European Championship finals was already certain. Then he was also used in the three friendlies in November 2015 and March 2016.
On May 9, 2016, he was appointed to the provisional squad for the Euro 2016, with which a training camp in Portugal began on May 23. He was then also taken into account for the final squad. In the Welsh’s first European Championship game, which they won 2-1, he was in the starting line-up, but was replaced when the score was 1-1 in the 71st minute. Substitute for him, Hal Robson-Kanu scored the winning goal ten minutes later. He then came on three times as a substitute: in the group game against England, in the round of 16 against Northern Ireland and in the semi-final against Portugal, which brought a 2-0 defeat and thus the tournament.
In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , which began after the European Championship , he only had one use in the home defeat against Ireland. The Welsh were eliminated as third behind Serbia and Ireland. In the UEFA Nations League 2018/19 he did not play. He was used three times in the successfully completed qualification for the 2020 European Football Championship .
