De Meer Stadium 1937

The Staafincident ( Dutch for stick incident , in German-language media the term iron rod throw is found ) was a serious case of football hooliganism that occurred on September 27, 1989 in the old Ajax stadium de Meer . During a home game of the AFC Ajax against Austria Wien , the Austrian goalkeeper Franz Wohlfahrt was hit by an iron bar thrown onto the field from the F-side . Ajax lost the game at the green table and were banned from UEFA games for a year .

prehistory

Earlier this year Michael van Praag had replaced Ton Harmsen as Ajax chairman. At the initiative of the new chairman, well-known Dutch people were invited to speak at the stadium. After Frank Masmeijer and Harry Slinger had each accompanied a match, Freek de Jonge came on that September 27, 1989 in the game against Austria Vienna. The two clubs met for the UEFA Cup . Favorite Ajax had lost the away game against Austria Wien 1-0 and had to win at least 1-0 at home. At the time, Austria made negative headlines due to the Waldheim affair : During the Second World War, Waldheim is said to have been involved in deportations and actions against partisans, which he had suppressed in his autobiography.

Telephone call for Mr. Waldheim

De Jonge started the evening as a guest speaker with an innocent joke about Danny Blind . In the second half of the game, however, he stated that there was a call for Mr. Waldheim: He should please call Mr. Wiesenthal back. After 90 minutes Ajax were 1-0 up, but Austria Wien drew level in extra time, so Ajax was about to be eliminated. The F-side began, “Nazis! Nazis! ”And 17-year-old Ajax fan Gerald M. (name changed) threw an iron bar onto the field from the F-side grandstand, which hit Austrian goalkeeper Franz Wohlfahrt in the back. Wohlfahrt collapsed in alarm. The game was canceled when the score was 1: 1. The pole was recovered from the field by the Swiss referee Bruno Galler , and it was handed over to the police by Michael van Praag. A replica was later added to the Ajax Museum.

De Jonge said the next day that he regretted the comment, but denied any connection to the unrest. Nico Scheepmaker described de Jonges' behavior as another slip-up after unfortunate comments on the Hillsborough catastrophe and the hostage-taking of Bovensmilde , in which Moluccan terrorists, among other things, made elementary school children hostage in 1977 .

Consequences

Ajax lost the home game at the Green Table 3-0 and was excluded from UEFA matches in the first instance for two years (seasons 1990–1991 and 1991–1992). In the appeal process, the latter was reduced to one year (1990-1991 season), but Ajax had to play the three subsequent home games in UEFA competitions at least 100 kilometers from Amsterdam. The Appeals Committee took into account the unfavorable behavior of Freek de Jonges in their decision as aggravating. For the damage, Ajax took recourse against the pole thrower , with whom a settlement was entered, after he had been sentenced in 1996 to damages of 5 million guilders and assuming the legal costs of 15,000 guilders. Gerald M. was arrested a few days after the incident and sentenced to five months in prison at the end of 1989, three months of which are unconditional . After serving his sentence, he applied for and received a subscription from Ajax.

The Staafincident highlighted the outdated security of the Stadium de Meer and increased the momentum for a new building, which was realized a few years later with the Johan Cruyff Arena .
