The Swedish U-16 national soccer team is a Swedish junior national soccer team . It is organized by Svenska Fotbollförbundet and represents the Kingdom of Sweden as a selection team in the U-16 age group . Eligible to play are players who have not yet reached the age of 16 and who are Swedish citizens ; this may be deviated from in invitation tournaments.

Background and story

No official tournament is currently organized by FIFA in the U-16 age group. Since a pilot phase in 2012, UEFA has been organizing so-called “development tournaments”, but these do not have the character of a Europe-wide championship. Rather, the focus here is on spotting young talent and exchanging ideas with other associations. This is also reflected in the association's work, as over 50 players are regularly invited to the Swedish association's multi-day courses apart from international matches .

Until the age level was raised by one year in 1989, the U-16 national team took part in the qualification for the corresponding FIFA World Cup competition, and the U-17 youth team has been competing since then . The U-16 selection was denied participation in the final round. Until the similar increase for the corresponding European Championship in 2001, the U-16 national team started qualifying in 1982, with eight finals, reaching the quarter-finals against Spain at the U-16 European Championship finals in 1995 was the greatest success.
