Matjaž Kek (born September 9, 1961 in Maribor , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Slovenian football coach and former football player . From 2007 to 2011 he was the coach of the Slovenian national football team .
His son of the same name, born in 1991, is also active in football.
Player career
Kek began his professional career in 1979 as a midfielder with his native NK Maribor in the then Yugoslav league. In 1984 he switched to the second Austrian level at SV Spittal and to the libero position . Before the spring season 1989 he was signed by the first division club Grazer AK . With the athletes in 1990 came the relegation to the second division, but Kek stayed in Graz until 1994 and became the "bellwether" of a young and ambitious team. Then he went back to NK Maribor, at that time already a fixture in the independent Slovenian league . From 1995 to 1999 he won three championship titles with the "Violets". Kek was known for his hard and precise shot and his clear style of play.
Coaching career
After retiring as a player, he became an assistant coach at his home club and was promoted to head coach in 2000. Under his leadership, the NK Maribor won the Slovenian championship in 2001 and 2003. Later he started to work as a youth coach for various youth teams at the Slovenian Football Association . On January 3, 2007, Kek was appointed the new head coach of the Slovenian national team .
After the failure of Slovenia in qualifying for the 2012 European Football Championship , Kek resigned as coach of the Slovenian national team on October 24, 2011. His successor was Slaviša Stojanovič .
From February 2013 to October 2018 he coached the Croatian first division club HNK Rijeka , with whom he a. a. twice the national cup and once the Croatian championship.
