Sergio Canales Madrazo (born February 16, 1991 in Santander , Cantabria ) is a Spanish football player .

Club career

Canales began his career as a ten year old in the youth of his home club Racing Santander .

In 2006 he was an integral part of a player swap between Santander and Deportivo La Coruña . Depor was keen to sign Israeli goalkeeper Dudu Aouate at the time , and Santander would initiate the return of Pedro Munitis in return . However, for a long time it was not possible to agree on the transfer modalities, which resulted in a transfer farce. In the end, the rights of a total of eight players on both teams were shifted to make the move possible. Among other things, Santander gave 50 percent of the transfer rights of his youth player Canales to Deportivo.

As a result, Canales signed a contract in Santander until 2010 and rose to the professional team for the 2008/09 season . On September 18, 2008 he made his professional debut in a 1-0 victory in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup against Finnish club FC Honka . On October 5, 2008, his first appearance in the Primera División followed in a 1-0 away win at CA Osasuna . In total, he completed eight competitive games for Racing Santander in the 2008/09 season. In the following season 2009/10 he advanced to one of the "shooting stars" of the Primera División with 26 league appearances and six goals .

For the 2010/11 season Canales moved to the Spanish record champions Real Madrid . He signed a contract until summer 2016. In the Spanish capital, however, Canales could not prevail. For the 2011/12 season he therefore moved to Valencia CF on loan . Canales was a regular in Valencia until he tore a cruciate ligament in late October 2011. Shortly after his comeback in April 2012, he tore his cruciate ligament again. Nevertheless, after his loan contract expired in the summer break of 2012, he was permanently signed by Valencia CF.

Canales moved to Real Sociedad on January 31, 2014 . He signed a contract until June 30, 2018.

In the summer of 2018, Canales joined Betis Sevilla on a free transfer.

National team

As a member of the Spanish U-17 national team , he was European champion in Turkey in 2008 .

In 2008 he took part with the U-18 national team in the Copa del Atlántico in his home country, which he was also able to win with the team. He was voted the best player of the tournament.

With the U-19 national team, he was eliminated at the 2009 European Championships in the preliminary round, but a year later he reached the final at the European Championships in France .
