Diego Lainez Leyva (born June 9, 2000 in Villahermosa ) is a Mexican football player who has been under contract with the Spanish first division club Betis Sevilla since January 2019 . The winger has been a Mexican international since September 2018 .

Diego Lainez and his four years older brother Mauro were discovered by the scout Ángel González, who had already enabled the later national players Hirving Lozano , Rodolfo Pizarro and Cuauhtémoc Blanco to make the leap into professional football. While his brother went to the youth of the CF Pachuca , Diego switched to the youth of Club América . On March 1, 2017, the only 16-year-old Lainez made his debut in the Copa MX against Santos Laguna for the professional team of the Águilas . Just three days later he made his debut in the Liga MX in a 1-1 draw against Club León . He played his first starting eleven on March 19 against the UNAM Pumas . On August 4, 2018, he scored his first two competitive goals in a 3-1 home win against CF Pachuca.

On January 10, 2019, Lainez moved to Spanish first division club Betis Sevilla for a transfer fee of 14 million euros , where he signed a five-year contract. He made his debut on January 20 (20th matchday) in a 3-2 home win against FC Girona . In the remainder of the 2018/19 season , he completed eleven other missions. In the next 2019/20 season , he only made short appearances in 15 league games.

National team

Lainez took part in the 2017 U-17 World Cup in India with the Mexican U-17 national team. In the 2: 3 defeat in the group game against England , he scored both goals.

In November 2018 he took part with the U-20 selection in the CONCACAF U-20 championship 2018, which ended as runner-up.

Lainez was also part of the Mexican U-21 squad for the 2018 Toulon tournament . With his home country, he made it to the final, but was subject to the English selection . Lainez was crowned player of the tournament by his strong performances.

On August 29, 2018, Lainez was called up for the first time in the Mexican senior team . He made his debut on September 7th in a 4-1 defeat in a friendly against Uruguay .
