Villahermosa is the capital of the Mexican state of Tabasco .
geography
Villahermosa is located in the municipality of Centro in the state of Tabasco in southeastern Mexico. It is located in the coastal plain 50 kilometers south of the Gulf of Mexico on the Río Grijalva .

history
The city was founded as Santa Maria de la Victoria in 1519, renamed Villa Felipe II in 1596 and Villahermosa de San Juan Bautista in 1598. The city's cathedral was built in 1614. The place was of no significant importance for many centuries. During the time of the privateers, the city was plundered several times by the famous British privateer Henry Morgan , who undertook his raids from the English base Port Royal in Jamaica . In 1916 the city got its current name Villahermosa. In the 1970s and 1980s she made her fortune through oil discoveries.
Religions
87.1% of the population are Catholic, around 9% are Protestant.
Villahermosa is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Tabasco .
