Baron Aldenham

Baron Aldenham , of Aldenham in the County of Hertford , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , named after the village of Aldenham .

Award

The title was awarded on January 31, 1896 to the businessman and banker Henry Hucks Gibbs . He was a senior partner of the banking house Antony Gibbs & Sons (founded by his grandfather Antony Gibbs) and for almost 50 years director, at times also governor, of the Bank of England . He also sat for the Conservative Party of 1891/92 in the House of Commons for the City of London .

Another title

The fourth son of the first Baron, Herbert Cokayne Gibbs , was promoted to Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon in 1923 .

After the death of the third Baron Aldenham in 1939, the Barony of Aldenham passed to his cousin, the second Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon. Since then the two baronies have remained united.
