Edin Džeko [ ˈɛdin ˈdʒɛkɔ ] (born March 17, 1986 in Sarajevo , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Bosnian-Herzegovinian football player . The striker moved abroad when he was 19. After two years in the Czech Republic , he came to VfL Wolfsburg , with whom he won the German championship in 2009 . This was followed by four and a half years at Manchester City , during which he was twice English champion and once cup winner . Since 2015 he has been playing for the Italian capital club AS Roma . He is the captain and, with over 100 missions and more than 50 goals, the record player and goal scorer of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian national team , with which he took part in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil .
Career
Career in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Czech Republic
Edin Džeko played for FK Željezničar Sarajevo from 1996 to 2005 . In the 2004/05 season, Željezničar was coached by the Czech Jiří Plíšek , who recommended Džeko to the Czech first division club FK Teplice , who finally signed the young striker for 80,000 euros. Džeko, who signed a four-year contract, was immediately loaned to the second division club FK Ústí nad Labem , where Plíšek was a coach. In 15 games he scored six goals. He returned to Teplice during the winter break and scored three goals in 13 matches. In the 2006/07 season , Džeko was named the best foreign player in the Czech Republic .
VfL Wolfsburg
For the 2007/08 season Džeko was brought into the Bundesliga for VfL Wolfsburg by Wolfsburg's coach and manager Felix Magath . He received a contract there until 2011. The Bosnian quickly established himself in the first team under coach Magath and made 28 appearances. With eight goals, he was the team's second-best striker in his first year.
The following year he played a good first half of the season, in the second half of the season he only failed to score in four of the 17 games. With two goals in two minutes he gave Wolfsburg a 3-1 lead against Bayern Munich on matchday 26 , the game ended 5-1 and VfL took over the top of the table. On May 2, 2009, Džeko scored his first hat-trick in the Bundesliga within 13 minutes in the game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the second half . On the penultimate matchday he scored three goals again in the game against Hannover 96 . At the end of the season, Džeko became German champions with VfL Wolfsburg and was second in the Bundesliga scorer list with 26 goals behind his strike partner Grafite . The storm duo was the most successful of the past 35 years and broke the old goalscorer record (53 goals) of Gerd Müller and Uli Hoeneß from the 1971/72 season with a total of 54 goals .
On August 1, 2009 Džeko signed a new contract with VfL Wolfsburg until 2013. In the 2009/10 season he was the top scorer in the Bundesliga with 22 goals.
With his 1-0 goal against 1. FSV Mainz 05 on matchday two of the 2010/11 season , he replaced Diego Klimowicz as the record scorer of VfL Wolfsburg and scored ten goals by the end of the first half of the season , more than any other player in the Team throughout the season.
Manchester City
During the winter break of the 2010/11 season , Džeko signed a contract with Manchester City until the end of June 2015. He received jersey number 10. He made his Premier League debut on January 15, 2011 (23rd match day) in a 4-3 home win on the Wolverhampton Wanderers . Džeko scored his first goal for Manchester City in the FA Cup against Notts County . He scored his first goal in the Premier League on April 25, 2011 in a 1-0 win at Blackburn Rovers . In the end there were four goals in 17 league and cup games, the FA Cup victory and third place in the table with the team on the balance sheet of its first season in Manchester .
At the beginning of the 2011/12 season, Džeko scored a goal in the Community Shield game against Manchester United , but had to admit defeat with his team 2: 3. He also scored once in the first two Premier League games. On the 3rd matchday he scored four goals in the game against Tottenham Hotspur . Džeko was the first player in the history of Manchester City to score four goals in a Premier League game. Džeko then scored two goals in City's 6-1 derby win over Manchester United at Old Trafford .
On May 13, 2012 he scored for Manchester City in the last game of the season against Queens Park Rangers to equalize 2-2 in the second minute of stoppage time and brought the team on the way to the third title win in the club's history. Sergio Agüero scored the goal to make it 3-2 in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Džeko played 130 league games for Manchester City until the summer of 2015, in which he scored 50 goals.
AS Roma
For the 2015/16 season , Džeko initially moved to the Italian Serie A at AS Roma for one year . A purchase option for eleven million euros for the 2016/17 season was also agreed . This was used a short time later and Džeko was firmly tied to the club.
National team
Džeko played in the U15, U17 , U19 and U21 teams of Bosnia and Herzegovina . He made his senior national team debut on June 2, 2007 against Turkey . He is the record scorer for his country's national team (as of October 2013). In his association's greatest success to date, qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, he was involved with ten goals, making him the second best goalscorer of the European associations after Robin van Persie .
On May 7, 2014 he was coach Safet Sušić in the squad of the national team for the World Cup in 2014 appointed to Brazil. Bosnia started with a 2-1 loss to Argentina . The 1-0 defeat against Nigeria in the second group game meant Bosnia-Herzegovina was eliminated. Džeko had scored a goal when the score was 0-0, which the referee did not recognize. In the last group game against Iran , he scored his first goal at a World Cup . After the game, he was voted Man of the Match . After the resignation of Emir Spahic , he became captain of the national team.
In qualifying for the Euro 2016 , he scored eight goals as the fifth best goalscorer, including one in the 1-1 playoff first leg against Ireland. Due to a 2-0 defeat in the second leg, he missed the European Championship finals with his team.
In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , he scored three goals in the first four games, but then received the yellow-red card in the fourth game , so that for the fifth game on March 25, 2017, which his teammates beat 5-0 Gibraltar won, was banned. Three days later he scored his 50th international goal in the friendly against Albania . He is the first player born in the former Yugoslavia to do so.
