San Juan Bautista is a municipality in the US state of California . It bears the Spanish name of John the Baptist and is located in San Benito County in the San Juan Valley between the Gabilan Mountains and Flint Hills. According to the 2010 census , the population was 1862, including 1248 Mutsun Indians, who are counted among the people of the Muwekma Ohlone .
The Spanish Mission in San Juan Bautista , California was founded in 1797 by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen . She was the 15th of 21 missions on El Camino Real .
The mission was one of the locations in the film Vertigo (1958) directed by Alfred Hitchcock . For the film, a non-existent bell tower was added using trick photography.
