Mount Muir is a mountain in the Sierra Nevada in California , only one and a half kilometers from Mount Whitney removed. At 4,272 meters (14,015 feet ), the Fourteener is the eleventh highest peak in the state. It was named after the naturalist and conservationist John Muir .
The southernmost section of the John Muir Trail runs west a little below the summit and ends at the highest point of Mount Whitney. From the hiking trail, the ascent to Mount Muir is relatively difficult because of the debris on the steep slopes . Nothing is known about the first ascent.
The mountain was first climbed on the east side on July 11, 1935 by Nelson P. Nies and John D. Mendenhall. On September 1, 1935, Arthur B. Johnson and William Rice reached the summit via a similar route from the southeast. The eastern rock face is almost vertical and 430 meters high. As a result, ascents from the east with a level of difficulty of YDS Class 4 are significantly more difficult than the normal route from the west and take more time.
