Counoise

Counoise is a red grape variety that is grown in many areas of southern France . The variety appears to be of Spanish origin. It is said that it was given to Pope Urban V by a Spaniard named Counesa .

It produces acidic and spicy wines with a light color, which are mainly used as blends . It can be found in the following appellations, among others: Côtes du Rhône , Châteauneuf-du-Pape , Gigondas , Vacqueyras , Rasteau , Côtes du Ventoux , Côtes du Luberon , Les Baux-de-Provence , Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence , Coteaux de Saint Christol, Cabrières, Coteaux de Vérargues, Coteaux du Languedoc , Montpeyroux , Pic Saint-Loup , Saint Drézéry, Saint Georges d'Orques,Saint Saturnin etc. In 2007 a planted vineyard area of ​​472 hectares was surveyed (ONIVINS statistics)

It is often confused with the Aubun grape variety .
