Arthur von Seckendorff-Gudent

Arthur Freiherr von Seckendorff-Gudent (born July 1, 1845 in Schweizerhalle near Basel , † November 29, 1886 in Vienna ) was a Swiss - Austrian forest scientist .

origin

His parents were the Saxon-Coburg-Gotha captain Robert von Seckendorff-Gutend (1801-1882) and his wife Isidore von Heldreich (1812-1891).

Life

In 1868 von Seckendorff was a private lecturer in Zurich ; In 1870 he became a professor at the Mariabrunn Forest Academy . From 1874 to 1886 he headed the Mariabrunn Forest Research Institute . This forest research center was founded in 1874 by Emperor Franz Josef , in particular to investigate the consequences of large-scale clear cuts and deforestation in Austria-Hungary . From 1875 he was also a professor at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna.

Seckendorff-Gudent made first attempts to "overlap" tree rings of different trees and can therefore be considered a forerunner of dendrochronology , which was then established by Andrew Ellicott Douglass .

In 1988 the Seckendorff-Gudent-Weg in Vienna- Hietzing was named after him.

family

He married Marie Louise von Teotochi, born Grassetti (1822–1905) in Vienna in 1872 . The marriage remained childless.
